I lead workshops on subjects such as collage, art for starters, papermaking at ArtisOn in Masham. I also am occasionally a visiting artist in schools/as part of exhibitions or projects. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this.

Art For Absolute Beginners

Have you ever wondered where to begin? Here’s your chance to have a go at art for starters. Get some gentle and fun guidance and try out materials such as watercolours, pastels, ink, acrylics, oils, and coloured pencils. This course is designed so you can try all of these and more, and enable you to find your inner artist!
– Find out the difference between dry, wet and spirit soluble materials
– Experiment with at least five different materials
– Experience their different properties
– Choose which to use for the desired effect
– Find out what suits you

Making and Using Handmade Paper

Explore some of the techniques involved in making fabulous handmade paper from scratch – make a variety of decorated and textured sheets then look at ideas for using them.
– Make a sheet of paper and embellish it
– Recognise the materials used and the different properties they have
– Create watermarks, emboss and sculpt with paper
– Get great ideas for using your unique papers for cards, decoration and more.

Introducing Acrylics

Acrylic paint has transformed painting since its introduction fifty years ago. Discover the versatility of this easy to use, vibrant medium. At this workshop you will learn what acrylic paints are and how to work with them. 
– Be guided through the use of acrylics by brush and knife
– Find out how to set out your palette and prime your surface
– Explore techniques and media for creating texture
– Learn about brush strokes, colour and tone progression and how to thin paint

Contemporary Collage and Image Transfer

Spend a day with artist Josie Beszant, learning collage techniques and experimenting with image transfer. 
– piecing papers together in different ways and with different adhesive techniques
– playing with visual perception in size and concept
– different ways of transferring photographic images
You will go home with some simple sample projects which will showcase the techniques learnt.

Image Transfer + Embellishing Techniques for Textile Artists
​Friday 4th October 2019

Led by two tutors these two love collaborating. Claire Humphries and Josie Beszant, have for the past couple of years, joined forces to come up with workshop ideas that combine their skills. Claire teaches dressmaking and freehand machine embroidery while Josie works in mixed media and sculpture and uses paper, fabric, paint and stitch extensively.
This workshop is aimed at textile artists and will be a fun experimental day looking at techniques for transferring photographic images on to fabric and then developing skills for further embellishing.
On this workshop you will:
– Learn about different methods of image transfer.
– Play with different fabrics and ways of embellishing.
– Create a small fabric transfer item using techniques you’ve learnt on the day.
You will take home with you a collection of small sampler items created using the techniques covered.
Please note that there is a £6 materials charge payable on the day.
